Stoke City have secured the services of Sunderland captain Dean Whitehead on a four-year deal for a fee that could rise to £5 million.
The 27-year old is the Potters' third signing of the summer after the acquisitions of teenage duo Matthew Lund and Ben Marshall.
Whitehead made 185 appearances for the Black Cats after joining from home-town club Oxford in 2004 and could make his Potters' bow against Preston on Saturday.
"I'm delighted to be here," Whitehead told his new club's official website. "I've known of the club's interest for about six months or so now. Everything sorted now and I'm very happy it is all done and dusted.
"The manager has been brilliant. I have spoken to him a few times. He has great plans for this place and as soon as I heard what he said I wanted to be part of it.
"It was hard to leave Sunderland but I think the time was right for me to change and have a fresh start. Like I said I am delighted to be here at Stoke and can't wait for the challenge to begin."
