Hundreds remember Jimmy Mizen

Memorial service takes place for Jimmy Mizen
Over 500 people have attended the memorial service for schoolboy Jimmy Mizen, who was murdered in a London bakery last week.

Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Lee, south-east London held the ceremony, at which friends and family paid tribute to the teenager who turned 16 the day before his death.

Committed Christian Jimmy had served as an altar boy at the church where he was baptised.

After the service, which took place at 12:00 BST, the family returned to the scene where Jimmy was killed to lay flowers and say prayers.

His 56-year-old father said: "It does not have to be like this. People are saying something must be done. I just wonder how futile it is with more and more legislation and laws.

"Perhaps we all need to look to ourselves and look to the values we would like and our responses to situations in our life."

Mr Mizen's son died after suffering a fatal injury to his neck after a shard of glass struck him during a fight that broke out at the Three Cooks bakery in Lee on May 10th.

Jimmy's death brings the murder toll for teenagers in London up to 13 this year.

Last week at a school leavers' mass outside their son's old school St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive in Eltham, his parents paid tribute to their son.

Mr Mizen and his wife Margaret, aged 55, described Jimmy as a "happy-go-lucky" child.

He leaves behind two sisters and six brothers: Tommy and Joanne, both aged 35; Billy, 28; Bobby, 24, Samantha, 21; Harry, 18 and George, eight.

Jake Fahri, aged 19, of Millborough Crescent, Lee has been remanded in custody in connection with the murder and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on August 21st.End of story
