Ricky Ponting has equalled Donald Bradman's 29 Test centuries with a 100 against South Africa on day one of the second Test.
The Australian captain helped the visitors to an unimpressive 228 for 5 as the South Africans attempt to fight back from a loss in the first match of the series.
Ponting was dropped on five and then survived a dubious lbw decision on 98. After the leg before claim, he hit a quick boundary to reach Bradman's record before succumbing next ball
Ponting is now equal fifth in the all time record list. He and Bradman sit behind the greatest ever century-maker Sachin Tendulkar.
Tendulkar is on 35 Test 100s, Sunil Gavaskar is second with 34 while Steve Waugh and Brian Lara are on 32 and 31 respectively.
Ponting was typically self deprecating in response. He pointed out that Don Bradman had made his 100s in less Test matches, saying: "I think people will look at the amount of games played to make those centuries and how I'm almost double him."
The captain of Australia was more worried about his country's poor start to the second Test than his own personal achievements.
Ponting said: "The conditions were reasonable. It was a bit two-paced and the ball was reverse-swinging but you have to give credit to South Africa, they were very disciplined.
"It was a disappointing end to the day to lose three wickets after working so hard to set a foundation."
