Portsmouth have signed Jermaine Pennant from Liverpool on a loan deal which runs until the end of the season.
Pompey were hoping to secure the winger on a permanent deal, but Pennant is a free-agent at the end of the season and rejected that option in favour of a loan move, and will now decide his long-term future in the summer.
Portsmouth manager Tony Adams, who was Arsenal captain when Pennant signed for the Gunners as a 15-year-old in 1999, was delighted with his new addition.
"I've known him a long time," Adams told the club's official website.
"We were together at Arsenal a long, long time ago. He was the new kid on the block and a very exciting prospect.
"He's quick and technically gifted. He can have a go at defenders."
Adams also believes that the 26-year-old will bring the best out of the players around him, especially his former Liverpool team-mate Peter Crouch.
"I saw him play with Peter Crouch for Liverpool at Fulham last year and he was constantly getting past their left-back and getting crosses in for Crouchie," Adams said.
"That's a good combination that I wanted to put back together."
"He's going to put some good crosses in and hopefully weigh in with a few goals himself."
The signing will be welcome news to Portsmouth fans who have seen Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe already depart during the January transfer window.
