Britain is a nation that believes in fundamental human rights and freedoms, according to a poll released today by Liberty.
Ninety-six per cent of people taking part in the poll, published on Human Rights Day, said it is important that there is a law that protects rights and freedoms in the UK.
Despite the support for the Human Rights Act, which the Conservatives have pledged to repeal if they come to power, only 11 per cent of people taking part in the poll remember receiving or seeing any information from the government about legislation.
Liberty Director Shami Chakrabarti, said: "Anyone searching for a bit of pre-Christmas cheer should look no further than this heartening poll.
"Despite the many serious challenges faced in Britain and beyond, the people of the world's oldest unbroken democracy remain steadfast in their commitment to human rights."
Other results show 92 per cent of people do not agree with torture or degradation and 95 per cent believe in the right to privacy.
Eighty-nine per cent believe that freedom of speech, protest and association are either vital or important.
