Venus beat her sister Serena in straight sets
Venus Williams has won her fifth Wimbledon title defeating her sister Serena in straight sets. The 28-year-old beat her younger sister 7-5 6-4 in a fascinating encounter at the All England Club.
Serena held the psychological edge going into the contest as she had won both previous Wimbledon finals between the two, and this contest seemed to be heading the same way as Serena broke Venus serve to storm into a 4-2 lead in the opening set. Venus fought back however, and took the opening set 7-5.
Venus then saw her serve broken again early in the second set, but once more showed her determination by storming back to win 6-4.
Unsurprisingly Venus paid tribute to her sister after receiving her trophy.
First I have to say great match to Serena," Venus said. I can't believe that it's five (titles).
When you are in a final with Serena five seems so far away from that first point. She played so awesome it was a real task to beat her.
Serena was gracious in defeat, paying tribute to her sister and emphasizing what a great family occasion it was.
She was a little better today, Serena said. it didn't work out the way I planned. But it's definitely a great celebration for our family. We're really happy.
"I've been working really hard and fighting for everything and I'm so happy at least one of us was able to win. We're just glad to be in the finals again and we hope it can keep happening.
The victory means that Venus becomes one of only four players to lift the Wimbledon trophy five times or more in the Open era.
