There has been a slight improvement in the number of primary school children reaching the expected standard in maths and English, results show.

The number of pupils attaining expected results in English rose to 81 per cent, from 80 per cent last year.

There was a similar improvement in maths where 78 per cent of children reached the expected standard, compared with 77 per cent in the previous year.

Test scores in science remained unchanged at 88 per cent.

Despite the improvements, some head teachers have criticised the government's decision to publish the results today after major problems with marking, claiming it "beggars belief".

Teachers claim there is widespread concern about late or missing results as well as reported inaccuracies in marking standards.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families, however, has said there is no evidence that the marking quality has been compromised and therefore there was no need to delay the publication of the results.
