Liverpool is hosting events today as part of ceremonies in observance of Holocaust Memorial Day.
The Philharmonic Hall in the city will stage remembrance events to mark the anniversary of the liberation of those held at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945.
Survivors and religious leaders such as the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams and Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks will be present at the ceremony which will consist of poems, music and speeches as well as personal stories from survivors.
According to the Liverpool Echo, celebrities such as Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, Yoko Ono, Stephen Fry, Jerry Springer, Paul O'Grady and Ronnie Corbett have donated glasses to a mural consisting of hundreds of spectacles meant to show the number of casualties during the Nazi regime's killing of the Jewish people.
Speaking about the day, a spokeswoman for the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, Christine Shaw, said: "On Holocaust Memorial Day, we reflect on the lessons society can learn from the Holocaust and other genocides in an effort to tackle the intolerance and prejudice that still exists in the UK today.
"There has been huge interest from all over the UK and it is wonderful to see the commitment of so many sections of society in marking the day."
Holocaust memorial services are expected to be held in over 2,000 schools across the UK as well.
