David Cameron is being urged by Conservative MPs to ensure he gets adequate protection for Britain's financial services industry at a European Union summit.

The meeting of Europe's leaders is designed to try and find a solution to the continent's ongoing debt crisis.

Mr Cameron risks alienating members of his own party if he backs measures to rescue the eurozone economy by giving more power to European institutions. The last time the Conservative party were divided over Europe was during John Major's leadership in the 1990s, when it tore them apart.

In a letter signed by more than 20 Conservative MPs and published in the Daily Telegraph, legislators noted: "European Union proposals pose a grave threat to Britain's financial services industry."

The letter continues that is it vital that the government "fights our corner" by ensuring a Britain-specific safeguard.

Former Labour foreign secretary David Miliband said that it is key that Mr Cameron tackles eurosceptics in his party.
