Cherie concedes ground over Brown 'liar' jibe

Cherie Blair has backtracked over denials she called Gordon Brown a liar during the 2006 Labour party conference.

Mrs Blair was overheard by a reporter as saying "well, that's a lie" when Mr Brown said it had been a privilege to work with then prime minister Tony Blair.

A Bloomberg reporter claimed Mrs Blair made the remark as she passed by television screens in the display area outside the auditorium.

Downing Street and Mrs Blair strenuously denied the claims in the following days, although Bloomberg stuck by its story.

"Honestly, guys, I hate to spoil your story, but I didn't say it and I don't believe it either," Mrs Blair told reporters at the time.

But comments made in her autobiography, which was released today after being serialised in the Times, have clouded the issue.

Mrs Blair sticks by her denial but admits in Speaking for Myself that although she did not say Mr Brown was a liar, she may have been thinking it.

"The truth is that whatever I might have felt, I never said it," she writes.

On the reaction to her reported comments Mrs Blair likens the media reaction to "a rugby scrum after a loose ball".

The autobiography, which has been released months ahead of schedule, has arrived as Labour struggles to regain the political initiative after bruising local election results.

Mrs Blair told the Times last weekend that Mr Brown is being advised by her husband on how to win the next general election and accused the former chancellor of 'rattling the keys' while Mr Blair was still prime minister.End of story
