The Duchess of Cornwall is "recovering well" after undergoing a hysterectomy operation in central London.

Camilla was admitted to King Edward VII's Hospital Sister Agnes last night, a Clarence House spokesperson confirmed, and had the operation this morning.

"The Duchess of Cornwall had an operation this morning and is recovering well. She is expected to stay in hospital for the rest of the week," the spokesperson said.

"The operation was performed by Michael Dooley and Marcus Setchell at King Edward VII hospital in London."

Camilla's plans to have the operation to remove her womb were confirmed by the royal household last month.

Royal officials said that the wife of the Prince of Wales would be unable to perform official duties for about six weeks after surgery.

A hysterectomy represents a common surgical procedure in the UK, particularly in women over 55.

According to the hospital website, King Edward VII's Hospital for Officers, as it was known then, was established in 1899 as a hospital for sick and wounded officers after the Boer war.

It is now a "private independent, acute hospital [which] offers the highest standards of medical excellence, the most modern equipment and facilities combined with impeccable standards of care".

Camilla had joined her husband, Prince Charles, on a tour of the Middle East last month.
