Gordon Brown refused to answer questions about his position
Gordon Brown has refused to answer journalists' questions regarding his position within the Labour party.

The prime minister dismissed the questions at his monthly press conference today as "gossip" and claimed he wouldn't be drawn into answering who within the party could challenge him for his position.

When asked: "Who in your cabinet could do your job?" Mr Brown replied: "I'm not going to be put off by the sort of gossip you're talking about today".

The prime minister added: "We're making the right decisions as a government. I'm happy to be judged on what I do and how we perform".

Mr Brown discussed the crowd violence in Manchester last night involving Glasgow Rangers' fans, claiming "last night was a disgrace".

He said that laws about drinking in public places around sporting events would be reviewed as would matters of football violence "as a matter of urgency".

In relation to the ongoing debate regarding a referendum on Scottish independence, Mr Brown said that a vote wouldn't take place "now or in the immediate future".

He also claimed that despite allegations in Cherie Blair's autobiography he got on well with the wife of the former prime minister.

"I enjoyed working with Mr Blair and Mrs Blair and I have nothing but praise for the work they have done for this country," he said.End of story
