Brown on offensive in PMQs

Wednesday, 16 Jan 2008 15:00
Gordon Brown enjoyed one of his strongest PMQs performances
Gordon Brown attacked both Conservative and Liberal Democrat policies as he reiterated his commitment to a stable economy in the Commons today.

Prime minister's questions saw Mr Brown criticised by Tory leader David Cameron for not being able to take quick decisions about struggling bank Northern Rock, which has been the subject of nationalisation speculation this week.

Mr Brown said he was determined to do whatever necessary to safeguard low inflation and interest rates, telling MPs: "To go backwards and forwards as he [Mr Cameron] is doing would put the stability of the economy at risk."

New Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg also came under fire as the prime minister referred to a document drawn up by during the third party's recent leadership election.

The 'Calamity Clegg' dossier highlighted Mr Clegg's inconsistencies on several major policy issues and resulted in his attempts to press the prime minister on the state of the housing market being upstaged.

"On every major social and economic issue the leader of the liberal party has flip-flopped and keeps flip-flopping," Mr Brown said, prompting cheers and jeers from the government backbenches.
