Police in Seattle have said they have shot a suspect, possibly killing him, following the shooting dead of four police officers.
Reports from Washington State said police acted on a tip-off, swarming around the property and allegedly opening fire after the suspect failed to come out of his property.
It is believed they used a loud-speaker to call on Maurice Clemmons, 37, who they have been seeking following an ambush yesterday.
The search for Mr Clemmons was launched after four police officers were shot dead in an attack on a coffee shop in Parkland on Sunday morning.
A spokesperson for local police told the Associated Press news agency: "He may be deceased from his gunshot wound."
Pierce County sheriff's spokesman told reporters earlier that Mr Clemmons was one of several people investigators wanted to talk to and that he could not be called a suspect at this point.
Lakewood police chief Bret Farrar publicly identified the four slain police officers after an "extensive and very difficult notification process".
"All four of our slain officers had been with this department since it started five years ago. Sergeant Mark Renninger and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold, and Greg Richards were police veterans when they started and all have been outstanding professionals.
"This is a very difficult time for our families and our officers. The families will have many challenges ahead of them and we ask that their privacy be respected. Please keep our families and Lakewood Police in your prayers," he said.
Sgt Renninger, 39, is survived by a wife and three children; Officer Owens, 37, is survived by a former wife and a daughter; Officer Griswold, 40, is survived by her husband and two children; Officer Richards, 42, is survived by a wife and three children.
