Phil Brown says he is "very disappointed" and "extremely sad" to have been shown the exit at Hull City after four years in charge of the Tigers.
The former Bolton Wanderers assistant manager and Derby boss was sacked earlier today with Hull above only Portsmouth in the Premier League and three points adrift of safety.
Brown had helped guide the club to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2008, going on to secure survival on the last day of the season.
In a statement released via the League Managers' Association (LMA) the 50-year-old said: "I am obviously very disappointed with the club's decision and the fact that I will now not have the opportunity to secure Hull City's status in the Barclays Premier League for a third consecutive season.
"Although I am extremely sad to be leaving Hull City, I am very proud of my achievements during my time as manager, especially having led the team into the top flight of football for the first time in the club's 104-year history and ahead of schedule.
"It has been a fantastic experience and I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all of the players, past and present, and also to my staff. Finally, I would like to thank the fans for their support and wish the club every success in the future."
Hull City currently lie in 19th place with 24 points from 29 games. Wolves are in 17th place with 27 points having played the same amount.
Alan Curbishley, Paul Jewell, Mark Hughes, Gary Megson, Gareth Southgate and Dean Windass have all been mentioned as potential replacements.
Caretaker managers Brian Horton and Steve Parkin are likely to be in charge for Saturday's trip to Portsmouth.
