Stuart Pearce says he was "disgusted" by Manchester City's 1-0 defeat by Middlesbrough at Eastlands.
In an astonishing outburst, the City boss accused his players of lacking "moral courage", making an exception for goalkeeper David James who pulled of a string of saves.
After a fourth defeat in a row, Pearce said: "I've never been one to mix my words. I was quite disgusted by today.
"I'm the one who has to stand up and take the blame and behind me are ten players, except maybe the goalkeeper.
"The rest were awaful. I feel really sorry for the supporters because that was the kind of performance I've never seen.
"If I was a supporter of this football club, I would have done exactly as I saw a Middlesbrough fan do and shove the season ticket in my face.
"There was a lack of moral courage, a lack of someone standing up and taking responsibility.
"Middlesbrough came in between tough games and couldn't believe their luck. I back the players but I can't back that.
"They've got to look me in the eye every time they walk past me in the corridor. I've got to coach them but they've got to look me in the eye."
City next play Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday at White Hart Lane.
