Paul Gascoigne has been arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
The ex-England star was taken into custody at about 02:15 GMT this morning following a dispute in the Jesmond area of Newcastle.
The troubled former Newcastle and Spurs midfielder was released by Northumbria police some time this morning with a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly.
Gascoigne, 42, has fought a well-documented battle with alcoholism through out his career.
Police could not confirm how much the notice was for, but fines are set at £50 and £80, depending on the seriousness of the offence.
A spokesperson for Northumbria police said: "At 02:15am today, a 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly."
Gascoigne, who has also played at Lazio, Rangers, Middleborough and in China, had spoken publically of his struggle with alcoholism in March.
He recently claimed that he was getting his life back on track with the help of another former Newcastle hero Peter Beardsley.
He was sectioned three times under the mental health act last year.
