The planned sequel to Paranormal Activity is now without a director after Saw VI director Kevin Greutert was recalled to the horror franchise.
It had been announced earlier this month that Greutert would take the reins of the follow-up to Oren Peli's smash hit Paranormal Activity, which made more than $100 million (£59.9 million) in the US alone from a budget of less than $15,000 (£8,994).
But after rumours that Saw distributors Lionsgate had exercised a holding deal with Greutert to keep him with the Saw series of films, the director himself has now posted a pair of unhappy statements about the dispute.
Den of Geek reports that Greutert had posted an update on his personal website on Tuesday saying: "I'm in the middle of something really terrible right now, as anyone who has come to this site probably knows. While I fight for justice in this, the important thing is to avoid giving in to hatred and anger, because these emotions are life killers."
The post, which has since been removed, added: "Hopefully we will all arrive at an amicable solution. Thank you to everyone who is working with me on this."
However, the speculation that Lionsgate is to force Greutert to direct another Saw film, rather than Paranormal Activity 2, is all but confirmed by a subsequent online post by the director, which remains on his official site.
"I just had the task of telling my 83 year old mother that no, I'm not going to be allowed to direct the movie we were all so excited about when my family last got together, and that I'm being forced to leave town before getting a chance to see her again," he wrote.
"Yes, I'll be filming people getting tortured YET AGAIN. So we'll have to put off me making a film she can actually watch for another year. I'm not making this s**t up."
It remains to be seen whether Greutert will indeed direct another Saw film, but it is unlikely Oren Peli will direct a Paranormal Activity sequel this year, as he is currently in post-production on his new movie, set in the supposed Area 51 research facility in New Mexico.
