Public fear of lawlessness in Islamabad is growing after the second deadly attack in the Pakistani capital in 48 hours.
A high-ranking military officer and his driver were killed in broad daylight in an upmarket area of the city when gunmen on a motorcycle sprayed their car with bullets.
TV pictures showed Brigadier Moin Haider's car riddled with bullets.
"Unknown gunmen opened fire on a military vehicle in Islamabad's G-11 sector," police official Qamar Ahmed told al-Jazeera
"Witnesses have told us two men came on a motorcycle and opened fire."
On Tuesday five students died in twin suicide bombings at the capital's International Islamic University, prompting a citywide closure of schools, shops and offices.
No one has claimed any responsibility for today's attack, but both are thought to be in response to a massive army offensive against Taliban and al-Qaida linked militants in South Waziristan.
