Sheffield Wednesday have sacked manager Paul Sturrock after a poor run of form culminated in a 4-0 thrashing for the Yorkshire side against Colchester on Wednesday.
The Owls are just one point from the bottom of the Championship table with only two wins and eight goals from their 12 games.
Having survived a relegation dogfight last season and invested funds into the team during the summer chairman David Allen has finally lost confidence with the former Southampton boss.
"Unfortunately in spite of strengthening the squad this year, we have not made the desired progress and, to that end, we need a change in the coaching staff," he told the club's website.
"Our league position says it all. However, the chairman and directors would like to place on record our thanks to Paul for his efforts," he continued.
It may prove an expensive decision as the club could face a substantial compensation bill from Sturrock who signed a new deal with the Hillsborough outfit only last year.
The Scot took charge of the club in 2004 and immediately guided a floundering squad to League One play-offs and promotion, but his following two seasons have proved decidedly less successful.
