Michael Owen suffered a horrible knee injury to ruin joy resulting from England's finishing top of group B.
England came top of their group after an impressive first-half performance in the 2-2 draw with Sweden where they were suddenly able to keep the ball in midfield.
Sven-Goran Eriksson admitted that he did not know whether Owen would show his face again in the World Cup after slinking off after only a minute of the game.
Owen has taken over seven months to recover from the same injury which ruled Wayne Rooney out for just 50 days, but the Newcastle forward lasted barely 60 seconds of Rooney's comeback.
Owen passed a simple ball to a team mate but bizarrely put his foot down at a strange angle before the light-weight striker crumpled clutching his knee.
Skipper David Beckham was concerned by the early injury, saying: "I think it's a bad one. We are going to have to wait to see what the doctors say tomorrow.
"It's sad - Michael's one of those players you need in big tournaments. It's unfortunate for him and for us."
Owen is undergoing a scan to determine whether he will be fit to take any further part in the tournament.
