France's Naman Keita, who won bronze in the 400 metre hurdles at the 2004 Athens Olympics, has tested positive for testosterone.
The admission from the French Athletics Federation comes after IAAF president Lamine Dick's comments that doping procedures at the recent World Championships had unearthed one "adverse result".
Keita failed to qualify for the final of the 400 metre hurdles in Osaka and was one of several disappointments for a French team that took just two silver medals home from the event.
Keita admitted that he had ordered a dietary supplement from the internet in an attempt to ease a stomach injury.
"I made a huge error. July was a catastrophic month for me in terms of performances and after the French championships I was suffering a little in my stomach," he said.
"It wasn't my coach, nor my agent, nor anyone from the Federation who suggested doing it. The mistake I made myself."
Should a second sample given by the 29-year-old at a pre-Championship training camp confirm the presence of the banned substance, he could face a two-year ban from the sport.
Keita confessed that although he had requested an examination of his B sample he is expecting a similar outcome.
I've done that as you never know but I'm not a believer in Father Christmas," he said.
