Ronnie O'Sullivan struggled to 4-4 in the first session of his clash with qualifier Ryan Day in the World Championship, despite making the tournament's highest break so far.
'The Rocket' cleared up with a 140 to top the 139 he made against Dave Harold in the first round, but it was not enough to gain a lead against his determined opponent.
Welshman Day thrashed Joe Perry 10-3 in the opening round, suggesting that he would be no pushover, and he certainly lived up to his previous round form.
The world number one began well, taking the first two frames without needing to make a half-century, but Day hit back by clinching the next three.
In the frame before the interval, O'Sullivan conceded and left the arena while his opponent was still at the table.
O'Sullivan was not hit with a warning by match officials, despite what is considered to be unsporting behaviour.
After the two-time former champion had compiled his 140 to make it 3-3, Day produced a 68 to edge back ahead before a 65 from O'Sullivan ensured parity ahead of the next stint tomorrow morning.
On the other table, Peter Ebdon built a 6-2 lead over David Gray, first-round conqueror of Jimmy White.
Matthew Stevens and Ken Doherty resume this evening at 4-4, while Graeme Dott will start with a 5-3 lead over Nigel Bond, who beat Stephen Hendry.
