Norwich City have sacked manager Bryan Gunn with immediate effect.
A statement posted on the club's website claims assistant manager Ian Butterworth will take temporary charge of the team for Saturday's League One clash at Exeter City.
Norwich suffered an embarrassing start to the new season, following their relegation from the Championship at the end of the last campaign.
City slumped to a 7-1 defeat against Colchester last weekend, sparking angry scenes with Norwich fans venting their frustration at the bench.
City chief executive David McNally, speaking on behalf of the board, said on Friday: "Bryan has worked tirelessly for this football club for more than two decades, not least since taking over team affairs back in January.
"However, the board met this week following Saturday's unacceptable record home defeat in out opening league game of the season.
"Our goal this season remains unchanged, we want to be promoted and the next manager of Norwich City will have that as his number one priority.
"The board felt after lengthy consideration unanimously felt a change was in the best interests of all parties concerned, in order to give us the best possible chance of achieving our objectives."
