Sunderland comfortably beat League One Norwich City 4-1 in the second round of the Carling Cup at Carrow Road.

Paul Lambert's team were blown away by three Sunderland goals in ten first-half minutes from Teemu Taino and a superb double from Andy Reid.

Norwich battled back to score in the second half through Wes Hoolahan, however their comeback was immediately halted by an own goal from Owain Tudor Jones and they finished with ten men after Michael Spillane was dismissed for a push on Fraizer Campbell.

Steve Bruce made nine changes from the Sunderland team that beat Blackburn on Saturday with Craig Gordon replacing Martin Fulop in goal and Campbell coming in to partner Kenwyne Jones upfront.

Paul Lambert also made a raft of changes for his second game in charge at Carrow Road with 17-year-old Tom Adeyemi and Tudor Jones starting in midfield.

Sunderland began the game brightly with debutant centre back Paulo da Silva heading wide from a corner.

Then with 15 minutes gone Campbell was denied a spectacular goal by Norwich keeper Ben Alnwick who made a finger tip save to tip the former Manchester United strikers overhead kick onto the bar.

Norwich responded well with Gordon saving well from a one on one with Simon Whaley and a long range shot from Simon Lappin that the Scottish keeper managed to tip over the bar.

The game ebbed and flowed and Sunderland should have opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Andy Reid floated a cross in for Jones which the Trinidad and Tobago international put wide.

However Jones made up for his miss moments later when he overpowered Gary Doherty on the right and picked out Teemu Taino in the box to slot the ball passed Alnwick.

Sunderland added to their lead four minutes later thanks to a sublime chip from Andy Reid. Jones was the provider again, finding Reid in space on the left, from where the Irishman proceeded to dink the ball over the helpless Alnwick from the edge of the box.

Bruce's men hit their third 10 minutes before half-time after a sweeping move from back to front. Campbell's pace was too much for Doherty and the striker squared to Reid who slid in to smash in his second of the night and complete a move of real class.

Norwich rallied before half-time, however Gordon kept them out again when he saved Tudur Jones' low volley from the edge of the box with his feet.

The Canaries continued to battle in the second-half but were frustrated by some good defending from Nyron Nosworthy and Paraguay captain Da Silva, as well as a lack of composure in the final third with Tudur Jones and Grant Holt guilty of wasting good opportunities.

Sunderland were happy to soak up the pressure at the back and use Campbell's pace on the counter attack, however their defence switched off and when substitute Cody McDonald's header rebounded off the foot of the post Hoolahan was on hand to tap into an empty net.

Chris Martin almost scored a second for Norwich a minute later when Lappin crossed from the left, however the substitute couldn't quite stretch to meet the ball.

Norwich appeared to be building momentum, however their hard work was undone by an own-goal when Reid's corner was deflected passed Alnwick by Tudor Jones to restore Sunderland's three goal cushion.

Norwich's misery was compounded 10 minutes from the end when Spillane was sent off for a push on Campbell as he raced through on goal. The striker collided nastily with Norwich goalkeeper Alnwick, who was forced off injured, resulting in striker McDonald going into goal as Lambert had used all three substitutes.

The stand-in goalkeeper was almost beaten straight away, however Carlos Edwards' fierce shot came off the bar and was cleared by the Norwich defence.

McDonald was tested again by Reid and Jordan Henderson, however he held on well to their shots, keeping the score at 4-1 at the final whistle.

Norwich: Alnwick, Otsemobor, Doherty, Spillane (Sent off), Lappin, Whaley (McDonald), Tudur Jones, Adeyemi ( Smith), Hoolahan, Holt (Martin), Daley. Subs: Rudd, Nelson, Hughes, Martin, McVeigh, McDonald, Smith.
