Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has rubbished tabloid reports claiming that he has offered the manager's job to Sven-Goran Eriksson.
The News of the World claimed that Shepherd thinks the current England boss is just the man to replace under-fire Graeme Souness.
The report alleged that Shepherd had tried to contact Eriksson by text message to sound him out about switching to St James' Park after the World Cup this summer.
But Shepherd hit back quickly, telling the club's official website that he had no memory of sending any such message.
"I must have amnesia as I can't remember sending a text message to Mr Eriksson - in fact I don't even have his number so I'd love to see this message," he said.
"All I can say is that I'd like to wish Mr Eriksson well with England in the summer, and good luck for whatever he chooses to do after that," he added.
There was some good news for the beleaguered Magpies when Souness said that he expects Kieron Dyer to return to first team action next week.
The England midfielder has been plagued with injury problems this campaign and has not played for Newcastle since October.
"If Kieron has a good week back in training, he could be in contention for a place on the bench next Saturday," said Souness.
