Police have arrested nine people after a coordinated operation in England and Northern Ireland led to the seizure of drugs worth over £2 million.
A stop-and-search on a van in Kilkeel, County Down and a follow-up raid in greater Belfast led police to arrest five men. Three men and a woman are being held in northern England in connection with the same operation.
The raid, which uncovered drugs including cocaine, speed and cannabis, was the outcome of a year-long operation led by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
Detective Superintendent Esmond Adair of the PSNI called Saturday's events "probably the most significant drugs seizure" Northern Ireland had seen "in recent times".
One of the arrested men is a Dutch national. Det Supt Adair said that police believed the drugs were trafficked by an "organised crime gang" from the Netherlands into England, and then on to Northern Ireland.
