David Beckham believes the support of the fans has been key in England's revival under Fabio Capello.
Failure to qualify for last year's European Championships shocked the nation, but Beckham has praised the response from the players and supporters.
Beckham said: "The defeat in 2007 meant a lot to us and hit us hard as a team. We were all upset and depressed about it for a few months.
"It took us a while, but as a team and country we are over it and our belief is back.
"We have always had the best support in the world and the players take confidence from that."
The LA Galaxy midfielder acknowledges that it may be seen that England are looking for revenge, but insists that this is not the case.
"We were all feeling negative in 2007 after that defeat, but that has changed now," he continued.
"The fans will want revenge but the players don't see it that way.
"It is important that we keep focused, and we know that if we win the game, we qualify."
The 34-year-old was an unused substitute in Saturday's 2-1 win against Slovenia, and despite being disappointed not to play Beckham believes it is proof of the strength in depth that England possess.
"Every player is the same - we always want to play," he said.
"But we have a lot of strength in depth on the right side. Theo Walcott, Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips have all performed well when selected.
"They have all been playing well for their clubs and they all have cases for a place in the starting line-up."
If Beckham plays some part against Croatia on Wednesday night he will take his total number of England caps to 113 - just 12 short of the overall record held by former goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who won 125.
