Seven million British women are unhappy with their sex lives, according to a new survey.
According to the National Relationships Survey conducted by Zestra UK, ten per cent of women have sex when they do not want it and 36 per cent crave more enjoyment from sex.
Of the 1,941 Britons surveyed, many appear unhappy with their diminishing sex lives, with couples in the south-west of England apparently having least sex.
Sixteen per cent of women say they find it difficult to get aroused despite finding their partner attractive and 18 per cent of 16- to 24-year-old women admitted to faking orgasms.
More than six per cent of British women feel that sex is akin to a household chore and three per cent call it a "irritating annoyance", reflected in the fact that a quarter of men say they are rejected by their partners half the time when looking for sex.
This appears to be having a serious effect on British relationships and 26 per cent of men say they would consider an affair if their partner refused sex for six months and one in ten would consider separation.
Marcelle d’Argy Smith from Zestra, which sells feminine arousal oil, says the survey suggests there is a "real sadness in couples that are living together, and really like each other, and yet they’re having lousy sex lives".
"Over a third of women want to enjoy sex more than they do," she said.
"It heartens me that women are prepared to do something about it, with a huge percentage (nearly two thirds) open to buying a feminine arousal oil. But, maybe this shouldn’t surprise me as nearly a million vibrators were sold to women last year."
On a regional basis, 45 per cent of couples in the south-west say they have sex rarely or not at all and only four per cent in Northern Ireland have sex every day or every other day.
Welsh couples enjoy the most regular sex, with 48 per cent having it at least once a week, while more people in the north-east (16 per cent) have daily sex than any other region.
But north-east women are more than twice as likely as the average British woman to have sex when they do not want it, with 23 per cent admitting to being persuaded.
The north-east also sees the highest percentage (13 per cent) of men being rejected by their partner and also more men who would consider a separation if they were turned down too often.
