One in three university students has admitted to plagiarising from books or the internet, according to a new poll.
The Opinionpanel Research poll for the Times Higher Education Supplement found one in six students said they had copied from friends while a tenth said they had tried to find essays online.
Men were more likely to copy than women, according to the survey.
More than one in five men (21 per cent) admitted they had cheated by copying work, compared with 14 per cent of women.
Thirty-seven per cent of students said they had copied ideas from books, and 35 per cent said they copied from online sources.
Only three per cent admitted to copying text straight from a book or online source.
More than half (54 per cent) of all third-year students interviewed said they knew someone who had plagiarised work.
The survey of 1,022 undergraduates at 119 universities and colleges comes after Oxford university said plagiarism among students could undermine the value of their degrees.
