A mother watched on in horror as her two-year-old son was struck and killed by a train at a level crossing, police have said.
Johnny Hall died yesterday afternoon after he walked on to the tracks at Werrington, Peterborough.
His mother had apparently tried to stop the toddler from reaching the tracks after he left her side, but she was unable to catch up with him.
"No blame is placed on anyone," Johnny's aunt Eileen Connors said. "There is only deep sorrow."
Superintendent Paul Brogden of British transport police said Johnny's mother was "distraught".
It is unclear how the two-year-old managed to pull apart metal railing gates that prevent people from accessing the crossing, safety fears over which have nevertheless been expressed in the past.
"It seems that Johnny made his way down the path towards the line and then got on to the crossing and was hit by a train," he said.
"His mother followed him down the path and tried to stop him getting on to the line - but to no avail.
"Tragically she saw the accident and she is obviously distraught. Johnny died at the scene.
