The bodies of three young men have been recovered from a Lake District beauty spot after they went missing while swimming there yesterday.
The trio, aged 15, 17 and 21, were part of a group who were swimming in Ullswater lake when a member of their party got out of their depth.
According to police, other members of the group subsequently got into trouble after they tried to assist the troubled swimmer. It is not clear whether the boy who originally came into difficulty is one of the dead boys.
The bodies of the three men were found following searches carried out overnight by the coastguard, a helicopter, police and civilian divers.
Cumbria police said that the deceased were all from the West Midlands area, but that further details about their identity would not be released until their families had been informed of their deaths.
"Police have now recovered the three bodies of the males who went missing in Ullswater lake," said a spokesman for the force.
"We are in the process of contacting the deceased males' families and updating them regarding the circumstances of the drowning.
"No details will be released until all family members have been informed regarding this tragic incident," the spokesman added.
According to reports, another 15-year-old boy was rescued from the lake during the incident which took place at around 16:00 BST yesterday.
The boy, who was taken to hospital, was pulled to safety after members of the public and a lake warden rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Police said that the boys were part if a group staying in the village of Glenridding, which overlooks Ullswater.
