Glastonbury to grow again

Glastonbury to grow again
Famed musical festival Glastonbury is to increase its capacity by 20,000 in 2007, its organisers have announced.

Speaking at the launch of a spin-off festival in Suffolk, operational manager Melvin Benn explained that next year's festival would make room for a total of 175,000 people.

But with the 112,500 tickets for last year's event selling out within three hours, it looks like the extra availability will still not satisfy demand.

"We are going to grow the festival… I'm anticipating growing it by up to 20,000 people next year," Benn told the BBC.

Throughout the festival's history incremental increases in attendance have occurred since its early years in the 1970s, when an attendance of 2,000 was considered to be impressive.

Whereas in 1986 when 60,000 people went to Glastonbury, more than 153,000 attended last year's festival, including media, artists, locals and site staff.

Among the extra attendees are the security staff, whose crucial role in conjunction with their massive perimeter fence was instrumental in saving the festival in 2002.

Kylie Minogue and Eric Clapton are expected to play in 2007, which takes place between Friday 24th June and Sunday 26th June.track End of story
