Michael Owen came off the bench to score the winner for the second time in three days as Newcastle beat Coventry 3-2 after extra-time at the Ricoh Arena.
Newcastle looked to be heading to an easy victory as they raced into a two-goal lead inside the first-half.
Sky Blues defender Scott Dann inadvertently gave Newcastle the lead when he turned a James Milner cross into his own net.
The impressive Milner the made it two when his in-swinging cross sneaked inside the far post.
Clinton Morrison gave Coventry a lifeline on the stroke of half-time when he beat Republic of Ireland team-mate Shay Given from 20 yards.
Newcastle looked like they were going to hang-on for victory, but three minutes into stoppage time at the end of game Dann made amends for his earlier own-goal when he powered a header past Given to equalise.
Owen put Newcastle back in front in extra-time with a trademark side-footed finish from inside the area after he'd beaten the Coventry offside trap.
The home side nearly equalised at the death when Elliott Ward hit the crossbar, but Newcastle did just enough for victory.
