Newcastle United ended a dismal run of results to beat Watford 5-4 on penalties at Vicarage Road and advance to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup at the Hornets' expense.
The evening started well for the Geordie faithful who showed no sign of being affected by the long journey when Antoine Sibierski nodded home a cross from Emre after just four minutes.
Steven Taylor was on the end of another pinpoint delivery from the Turkish midfielder seven minutes later, but could only send his header over the bar.
After those early flurries from the visitors the game became bogged down in a midfield battle as the two Premiership strugglers fought hard for a cup run that would provide welcome respite from league troubles.
On 72 minutes Damien Francis poked home an Ashley Young free-kick from close range to send the game into extra time and give cheer to the Vicarage Road fans who turned out on a bitter evening.
It was the England under-21 international who provided again as Watford took the lead 20 minutes into extra-time as Danny Shittu powered home a header.
But Scott Parker scored in the dying seconds to earn Newcastle a chance to gamble their progress on the penalty spot.
