The newest Doctor Who stepped out of the Tardis and into the spotlight last night for the premiere of the new series of the BBC1 sci-fi show.
Matt Smith, at 27 the youngest doctor, and Karen Gillan, who plays his companion Amy Pond, were out at a launch party in Cardiff on Thursday night to mark the start of the series which begins on April 3rd.
The new series will start with an episode which has been billed as 'Independence Day on the village green' and will see the Doctor carry on from where David Tennant left him - crash landing on earth.
The new series has been subject to some serious scrutiny from fans as it marks not just a change in Doctor and companion but also in the writing and production team with Stephen Moffat taking over head writer and executive production duties from Russell T Davies.
Davies was responsible for the re launch of the sc-fi classic which has since become one of the BBC's biggest hits.
Speaking at the event on Thursday night Smith described Gillan as the doctor's "sexiest companion yet." For her part Gillan hinted that the Doctor and his new companion kiss later in the series.
Other highlights in the forthcoming series include guest star appearances from James Corden and Bill Nighy as well as the return of old enemies including the Darleks.
The new series is the fifth to be released since the show was re-launched with Christopher Ecclestone and Billy Piper in the lead roles in 2005.
It is exported to over 50 countries worldwide.
