A provincial police chief is reported to be among ten people killed in a gun battle with US-trained Afghan troops in Kandahar.
Fighting is believed to have broken out after troops tried to remove an Afghan prisoner from a civic building on Monday.
Ahmad Wali Karzai, from the provincial council, is citied by the al Jazeera news agency as reporting the head of the criminal department and eight others are also amongst the dead.
The actual death toll and full details of the incident remain confused, however, with part of the city now closed off.
The clash is thought to have happened after the troops tried to free a colleague who had been arrested.
Kandahar province is a known Taliban stronghold, although there is no indication the militant group was in anyway involved.
