Andy Murray has continued his fine run in the Cincinnati Masters with a three-set victory over American Robby Ginepri.
The Scot looked exhausted at times in stifling conditions and was not at his consistent best but ground out a 7-6 (7/3) 2-6 6-4 victory to earn himself a place in the quarter-finals.
He will now face Andy Roddick, who he vanquished at Wimbledon, or Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela in the last eight, having seen off number one seed Roger Federer yesterday.
Murray started off in superb style, breaking the American in the first game of the first set, but Ginepri broke back in the sixth game to level things up.
The set then went with serve and headed towards a tie-break, at which point the young Scot stepped up his game and produced some fine shots to race into a 4-0 lead.
Ginepri pulled three points back but could not stop the 19-year-old from claiming first blood.
The American was perhaps unlucky to lose the first set as Murray had been having more difficulty on his service game and Ginepri made the most of his dominance in the fifth game of the second set to go 3-2 up.
Murray seemed to lose heart after that and Ginepri went on to take the next three games in a row to earn the second set in convincing style.
Both players were struggling in the heat as the third set began, but Murray more so after his exertions over recent weeks and Ginepri appeared to have taken the edge as he broke the Briton in the fifth game.
But Murray dug deep to break back in a gruelling eighth game and then his momentum carried him home to a place in the quarter-finals with another break in the final game after Ginepri tamely sent a smash long.
