Andy Murray wasted little time despatching Argentina's Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-2 to book a place in the semi-finals of the Valencia Open.
World number 34 Montanes, who has never been beyond the third round of a Grand Slam tournament, was not expected to beat Murray.
However, the 28-year-old has held a top-100 ranking since 2001 and was hoping to capitalise on Murray's recent six-week injury lay off.
Those hopes were dashed as early as the opening game when the Scot broke the journeyman's serve.
Murray survived a break-back to clinch the first set with a trademark backhand drop shot and Montanes never managed to recover.
Although the world number four occasionally looked out of breath he was good value for his victory. He will face either Tommy Robredo or Fernando Verdasco (the player who shocked him in this year's Australian Open) for a place in the final.
