Andy Murray has eased into the third round of the Madrid Masters after his second-round opponent Simone Bolelli retired with a shoulder injury.
The Italian was trailing 0-6 1-2 when he was forced to concede the match to the Briton, who is seeded fourth in what is a highly competitive draw.
Bolleli rarely troubled the Scot in a one-sided first set, which saw Murray register three breaks and win his own service games with ease.
Picking up where he left off last time on the ATP Tour, when he reached a grand slam final for the first time at the US Open before losing to Roger Federer, Murray looked fresh rather than rusty after having enjoyed a three-week break.
The world number four utilised every shot in his armoury - including his renowned drop-shot - to great effect, pulling Bolleli around the court like a puppet on a string.
Even Murray's serve, which was always the weakness many opponents chose to focus on, looked to be up at devastating speed without any sacrifice on accuracy as the world number 43 was blown away.
In the third round, Murray will face either Marin Cilic or Fernando Verdasco, with a possible quarter-final meeting to come against American number eight seed Andy Roddick.
