Andy Murray took less than an hour to destroy US opponent Robert Kendrick 6-0 6-0 in the quarter-finals of the Newport Hall of Fame championship.
The number one seed will now play another American, Justin Gimelstob, who overcame Kristian Pless 6-3 6-1 in his last eight match.
But joy at Murray's emphatic performance was tempered by the loss of Alex Bogdanovic, who bowed out 3-6 6-2 6-1 to Jurgen Melzer.
Melzer will face big-hitting Australian Mark Philippoussis in his semi-final, after the scud missile beat Mardy Fish 7-6 6-3.
Murray, 20, explained afterwards that he was understandably pleased with the manner of today's victory, although he is not resting on his laurels as he bids to become the first top seed to win in Newport for three decades.
"I did everything pretty well. I got a percentage of my first serves well, returned well and passed well," he said.
Kendrick meanwhile looked a shadow of the player that took French Open champion and Wimbledon finalist Rafael Nadal to five sets at SW19, but he hinted that a niggling shoulder injury had affected his game.
He revealed: "I'd rather take a beating like a man than retire."
