Andy Murray has set his sights on winning a Grand Slam after he beat world number one Rafael Nadal to win a pre-season exhibition event.
The Capitala World Championships, held in Abu Dhabi, might be an exhibition event but neither Murray nor Nadal gave an inch today. With a US$250,000 winners cheque on offer and early season bragging rights, both players went at it full throttle.
But it was Murray who claimed his second consecutive win over Nadal, after the sensational win over the Spaniard in the semi-finals of the US Open. The Scot has now beaten the Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic more than once and is a firm favourite to win a major this season.
When asked about his chances of winning a major this season, Murray said: "That's what I'm aiming for. I worked really hard in November, December to give myself the best chance.
"It was tough match, he made me do a lot of running," added Murray. "In the first game of the year you're going to feel it a bit, but I thought it was a great match from both of us."
Murray was also backed to claim a major sooner rather than later by his opponent today. Nadal tried to out-power Murray from the back of the court, but the Scot was in superb form and hit phenomenal winners one after another.
I played a very good match, but Andy played a little bit better. I congratulate him on his victory. He has a good chance to win in Australia," said Nadal.
