Muttiah Muralitharan is the first man to take 1,000 wickets in international cricket following his six-wicket haul against Bangladesh today.
The spin wizard has over 50 more wickets overall than all-time number two Shane Warne.
The rest of the top five list of total international wicket takers includes Glenn McGrath, Anil Kumble and Wasim Akram.
Muralitharan's 6-54 took him to 1,004 wickets on day three of the Test with Bangladesh in Chittagaong.
The Sri Lankan spinner aptly chose his 100th Test match to break the milestone.
His wickets have put Sri Lanka in a commanding position in the match and they require just 163 runs in their second innings for the win.
The brilliant bowler said: "When I played my first Test I never thought I would have all these records. All I wanted was to play a few games.
"It is a dream for me to play 100 Tests and to take 1,000 international wickets. I never expected it. I have had 16 years of hard cricket and that has included good times, bad times, and very difficult times."
Murali still lags behind Shane Warne in the number of Test wickets he has taken but despite questions over the legality of his bowling action he can now claim to be one of the world's greatest ever bowlers.
