England coach Peter Moores is open to bringing back former captain Michael Vaughan for the tour to the West Indies in the spring.
Vaughan has not played for the national side since standing down as captain following the third Test against South Africa this summer. At that time the Yorkshireman said he was determined to regain his place in the side as a batsman.
The 34-year-old was due to spend time with the performance squad in Bangladesh during November and December however that had to be curtailed due to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Despite Vaughan's lack of time in the middle and his poor run of form before leaving the side averaging just eight against the Proteas in the summer Moores has not ruled out a return for Vaughan in the New Year.
He told the Daily Telegraph: "Michael has had no cricket, but we have got to look at where we are now as a team and what we think is right to go forward as a batting unit.
"But we do know in Michael we have someone who one, is outstanding as an individual but is also a fantastic player.
"We have to weigh all that up about the players we've got in the squad at the moment."
Moores admitted there was still competition for places in England's batting line up and suggested that Middlesex man Owais Shah could be ahead of Vaughan at this stage.
"We left out Owais Shah for the two tests after doing very well in the one-dayers and is pushing very hard for his Test place," added Moores.
England's next Test is on February 4th against West Indies in Jamaica.
