Scotland's Colin Montgomerie has rediscovered some form, carding a three-under-par 68 in the first round of the French Open today.

The 44-year-old currently lies three shots behind early leaders James Kamte and Kyron Sullivan of Wales, who both carded six-under-par rounds of 65.

In inclement conditions at Le Golf National, Montgomerie put behind him a run of four missed cuts, securing birdies at three of the first four holes.

Despite dropping shots at the eighth and 16th, the Ryder Cup hero displayed his accuracy of old around the rest of the course, hitting 16 greens in regulation.

He suggested that the course conditions suited his style of play, adding: "You have to be very precise on distance and that's difficult because you can easily get wet."

Montgomerie, who this week appointed Paul Casey's former caddie Craig Connolly as his new bag man, also suggested that his solid performance could presage the recovery of the kind of golfing skill he regularly displayed over the last decade.

"I've got my swing back again, the one that I had back in the 1990s. I can now hit on the left again," he told the BBC, adding: "Physically I'm OK and I know that I can do it again."
