Paul Scholes was in typically modest mood after securing a crucial three points for Manchester United with the only goal of the game against Wolves yesterday, his 100th Premier League goal.
The former England midfielder became the 19th player to reach the landmark figure and now stands just two goals away from 150 for United in all competitions.
"You need to score goals to win games and thankfully the ball fell to me and I managed to put it away," Scholes, 35, said.
"I've been on 99 goals for a while so it was nice to get my 100th and I'm pleased with the achievement."
More importantly, the narrow win sent United back to the top of the Premier League on 63 points, two points ahead of Chelsea, who have played a game less, and Arsenal. But the title is still entirely in Sir Alex Ferguson's team's hands, with the Blues set to visit Old Trafford in April.
"All three teams will fancy their chances and it really is very tight," Scholes added. "It's always nice to be top of the league and it's a good time to be there with nine games left.
"It gives us confidence and hopefully we can win all our games and go on to win the league."
Ferguson was more fulsome in his praise for the evergreen Scholes, who began his United career as a box-to-box midfielder who could also operate as a second striker.
"Scholesy is a marvellous player and for a midfielder to score 100 goals is an outstanding achievement," the manager said.
"The way we play him now, sitting a bit deeper, it sometimes takes away that goal threat we always got from him as a young player. I'm just glad the opportunity fell to him because he was the best player to have it."
Ferguson also revealed that Wayne Rooney was a major doubt for Wednesday's Champions League clash with AC Milan after missing yesterday's win at Molineux with a knee injury.
United hold a 3-2 lead over the Rossoneri after last month's first leg.
