Irishman Paul McGinley broke the course record with a seven-under-par 65 to take the lead at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
The 41-year-old hit seven birdies and had no bogeys in a brilliant round which saw him finish one shot ahead of Swede Robert Karlsson at the top of the leader-board. McGinley produced a blistering finish with five birdies on the back nine.
A number of big names struggled at course which had been resigned by Ernie Els to make it harder to play on. Els himself could only finish on three-over-par 75 and he was joined on the same score by Darren Clarke.
McGinley however enjoyed playing on the course, saying: "I like to be challenged with course management and ball control.
"And when it's playing hard and fast this is a real proper test of golf. This is old-style. That is what the game was initially designed around and I revel in it.
"Distance is an important facet, but there should be a gamble where if you do miss it you're going to suffer the consequences," added McGinley.
Australian Marcus Fraser carded a round of five-under-par 65 to take third position on the leader-board. Welshman Garry Houston finished the round on four-under-par and he is joined on that score by Daniel Vancsik of Argentina and South Africa's Charl Schwartzel.
