Wasps director rugby Ian McGeechan was a relieved man after his side beat Castres 25-11 in the Heineken Cup today.

The English giants have had a disastrous start to the Guinness Premiership this season, losing five of their six games this season. But Wasps were back to their best today as they scored 17 points in the first quarter of the match today to set up a crucial win.

Paul Sackey, Tom Voyce and Josh Lewsey all scored a try each, and Danny Cipriani kicked two conversions and two penalties to give McGeechan something to finally smile about.

"I thought we started well and we were back to a lot of the things we do well," said McGeechan. "Castres were working hard. They are a big pack and we had to get things right today and we did.

"I thought it was a good defensive performance and offensively I thought we were very slick today. The experienced players had to take a lead and show up for real. I thought all of them did today. They delivered big time.

"It was obvious it meant a lot to everyone today. Honesty is what this club is about and I thought the honesty came out today. A lot of hard work went in and we got the benefits."

McGeechan was also happy that Lewsey and Cipriani – who had a training ground scuffle during the week – combined to score a try and jokingly shadow boxed as a celebration. An amused Wasps boss said he hoped the pair wouldn't start "kissing each other in training".
