French tennis star Amelie Mauresmo has shrugged off the disappointment of failing to secure the world number spot, claiming it will not be long before she does sit on top of the rankings.
Mauresmo was beaten in the final of the Qatar Open by Nadia Petrova, a defeat that meant the French player was unable to move to the position of world number one which she last held in 2004.
She said: "Kim [Clijsters] is not playing for a couple of weeks so I'll be the world number one soon anyway.
"Therefore, I am not too disappointed having failed to achieve that goal here."
That she failed to do so came as a surprise to many. Mauresmo had already won three titles in 2006, yet Petrova always looked in control during this final.
The 23-year-old Russian broke Mauresmo's serve three times in the first set, which she won 6-3, and got the all-important break in the second set, which she closed out 7-5.
Petrova was jubilant in victory and pleased to convert a final appearance into a trophy.
"I have won only one out of five finals before this tournament so obviously it's a great feeling to win," she said.
"I knew Amelie was the player to beat here and I had to play a solid game, which I did."
