Everton's versatile midfielder Marouane Fellaini will miss the rest of the season to undergo an ankle operation following a controversial challenge by Liverpool's Sotirios Kyrgiakos earlier this month.
Kyrgiakos was sent off for his part in the challenge during a fiery Merseyside derby on February 6th, but many pundits thought Fellaini deserved the same punishment for appearing to make contact with the Greek defender's shin.
Everton said the after Fellaini was seen by a specialist the severity of the injury became apparent.
Toffees manager David Moyes explained that the Belgian's injury was similar to the torn ankle ligaments sustained by Robin van Persie while on international duty for the Netherlands last year. The Arsenal striker is also expected to miss the rest of the season.
"He's not good," Moyes said of the 6ft 4in 22-year-old before last night's 2-1 Europa League win over Sporting Lisbon. "He's going to have an operation. He's got a similar injury to Robin van Persie and it's probably going to keep him out for six months."
If Fellaini, who joined from Anderlecht for a club record £15 million in September 208, is kept out for six months, his participation in the start of the 2010/11 season is also in doubt.
